How to Create a Morning Ritual for an Awesome Day

January 04, 2018

My life has changed dramatically. Yes, having a baby will do that for a person, but that’s not it. Finally getting the baby to sleep through the night is a miraculous thing but that’s not it either. The most impactful change I have made is having a morning ritual every single day.

I first read about morning rituals on a blog by Tim Ferriss. He shared a book called Daily Rituals, about the morning rituals of famous and accomplished people. This idea stayed with me for a couple of months until I finally began one for myself.

The days that I complete my ritual I have tons of energy and my brain feels clear. On the one day that I did not do my morning ritual, I felt tired and dull. This shows me that there is definitely something to this concept.
The original version of my morning ritual consisted simply of doing yoga. Then, every week or two, I would add a new habit to the mix to create what I currently call my Morning Ritual.
Each person’s morning ritual will be different based on what is important to them and what powers them up the most. Here is my current morning ritual. Mind you, it is continually evolving as I take things out, replace parts, or test out new things.

  1. Wake, brush teeth
  2. Write in my 5 minute Journal
  3. Drink a glass of water (already on my bedside from the night before)
  4. Aromatherapy diffuser automatically goes on, diffusing morning blend
  5. Put yoga/exercise clothes on
  6. Do 10 sun salutations & stretch in silence or while listening to music, book or podcast (10 min)
  7. Meditate (20 min)
  8. Bounce on rebounder while listening to music, book or podcast (5 min)
  9. Shower, finish getting ready

My morning ritual takes about 45 minutes. I know you may be thinking “I don’t have time to do all this in the morning”. I understand where you’re coming from. I used to think the same thing. However, once I started going to bed earlier and therefore, waking up earlier, I found the time. The hubby and I also take turns taking care of the baby in the morning so that we are both able to fit in our individual morning rituals. Once I started having a morning ritual I actually found that I had more time in general. I also have more energy and enthusiasm for my morning. I’m now able to greet my child with excitement instead of exhaustion (on most days anyway).

Here are some ideas for creating your morning ritual…

  • Journal
  • Stretch/yoga
  • Meditate
  • Listen to something inspirational
  • Listen to music you love
  • Go for a run
  • Drink lemon water
  • Use essential oils – I prefer an easy to use roller or diffuser on automatic timer
  • Write

I hope this helps to plant a seed in your mind and gives you some ideas to start creating your own morning ritual.

If you already have a morning ritual, please share it! I would love to hear what works for you.
